A contemporary of Vasily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, and Kazimir Malevich, af Klint began her explorations of abstract painting years before her male counterparts, but she has only become known recently. Greatly influenced by her interest in new forms of spirituality as well as advances in science and technology at the turn of the 20th century, af Klint imagined showing her paintings in a spiral-shaped temple.
