Two years earlier, El-Gazzar was imprisoned for creating works that were seen as a critique of King Farouk’s rule. This painting, likewise, criticises contemporary poverty and politics.

‘There is a saying in the Arab world that when you are trying to talk to someone but they are not listening, they are giving you “an ear of mud, an ear of paste”. The title of this work comes from that expression.’
