In the wake of his 50th birthday, Gerhard Richter confronted his mortality in a series of powerful paintings of skulls and candles – an emblem on the fragility of life.⠀

His ‘Schädel (Skull)’ continues a long tradition of Old Master vanitas artworks, in which the skull reminds the viewer of the certainty of death.⠀

This painting has been held in the same private collection for 30 years. Last exhibited in January 1988, it is currently on view at our King Street galleries until 4 October.⠀
