Photo by @anniegriffithsphotography. The Mexican gray wolf is the most endangered species of wolf in the world. Hunted nearly to extinction, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service released 11 Mexican gray wolves into the wild in 1998. Their numbers have grown slowly, but steadily since then. This wolf was photographed in a refuge in Arizona.

This photo is from the series of images I shot for a National Geographic (@ナショナルジオグラフィック) book and traveling exhibit called “Last Stand: America’s Virgin Lands,” authored by @barbarakingsolver. Our goal was to celebrate the last 1% of wilderness remaining in the United States, and urge its protection.

The image was shot on black and white infrared film. I then hand tinted the resulting prints. My goal was to use this romantic technique to give the images a sense of timelessness. The work raised more than a quarter million dollars for grassroots conservation efforts.
