I’ve sat down and done the math, when I’m 65, scientific consensus is almost certain that coral reefs will all be completely gone from the sea, if humans carry on living ‘business as usual’. It’s just 32 years from now. If loosing the beauty and wonder of the Great Barrier Reef and the outer coral reefs by mid century doesn’t seem to affect you much, maybe you will care to know about the livelihood of hundreds of millions of people from the effects of rising sea levels. Science shows us we can’t exist on this planet with a nearly dead ocean. Climate change impacts are currently having the ocean rise at an average rate of 3.2mm per year. Sea level rise has the potential to reach several meters over the next few centuries... This rising ocean is a consequence of thermal expansion of a warming ocean and melting ice sheets. Simply put, this is from pollution- atmospheric carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases. It’s been an eye opening journey, being guided by world experts in climate change and scientific reef researchers (including Australian of the year & Professor Tim Flannery, Prof Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, Prof Sophie Dove and author Anna Rose) learning about the most promising technology that scientists and engineers are working on to #reducecarbonpollution (that causes climate change). This is not intended to invoke fear, but we need to ‘call a spade a spade’. I’ll post some ‘how to help’ suggestions tomorrow. Even just 3 minutes a day of google research is a good step. #reducecarbonemissions #coralnotcoal #stopadani
