INCREDIBLY interesting plant species about to bloom at @thetorontozoo. The ‘corpse flower’ blooms normally every 7-10 years, mimicking the scent, coloring & temperature(!) of rotting flesh to attract beetles & flies who will then tote its pollen over to the next fake funky carcass for reproduction. How/why is it genetically programmed to this trick?! I dunno, but it’s crazy cool. And it’s Latin name is ‘amorphophallus titanum’ - y’know ‘giant misshapen penis.’ How cool is that? Go see it and take in the funk. I missed the bloom period again - missed it in Brooklyn, too. Next time! ?
