"This large sperm whale, over 10m long, basked in the sunlit calm of the ocean, allowing me to get within a meter of its large tail. This was their resting place before they plunged again into the dark black abyssal depths of the ocean 1800m below. Using sonar they rule a realm where monsters lurk and they hunt them for food. Sperm whales are the planet’s top apex predator with the largest brain of any species alive today. This was one of my most emotional experiences in the sea, where these creatures not only tolerated our presence but had an obvious curiosity about what we were.
Cachalot is the old term for sperm whales and is derived from the French, Spanish and Portuguese term for “big head.” They are found in every ocean of the World and favour deep water locations with this image photographed in the Azores." - @glencowans
