Two mornings ago, Nandu held her baby and did what mothers of newborn girls do in Piplantri... prepare her daughter’s basket for the planting ceremony. After her son spun the cradle, she placed Nisha within, carrying her two month old daughter to the field where she planted the first of 111 trees, making a pledge to keep Nisha in school and not to allow her daughter to be a child bride. In the past many families aborted baby girls, but in the last decade, the Piplantri Program of planting trees to protect girls and the environment has completely ended this practice, bringing empowerment and education for girls, reforesting this rural area of Rajasthan.
