Aboard the International Space Station (@国際宇宙ステーション), astronauts observe the Earth in all her beauty. A member of the crew currently living and and working aboard the station took this nighttime image of Java, Indonesia's largest island. With coasts illuminated by city lights, the islands of Indonesia stand out against the darkness of the Indian Ocean. The island of Java is the geographic and economic center of Indonesia and with a population of more than 141 million people, it is the world’s most populous island.
While orbiting our planet from 250 miles above at 17,500 mph, astronauts take photos of our home planet and conduct research that not only benefits life here on Earth, but will help send humans deeper into the solar system than ever before.
