Saturn’s moon Tethys peeps from behind Titan in this image captured by our Cassini spacecraft in 2009. Tethys is about 660 miles across, compared to Titan – which is larger than the planet Mercury. You can even see Titan’s thick atmosphere where it overlaps icy Tethys in the distance beyond. This natural-color image was taken at a distance of approximately 620,000 miles from Titan.
The Cassini spacecraft ended its mission after nearly 20 years in space with an intentional plunge into Saturn’s atmosphere on Sept. 15, 2017. The “plunge” ensured Saturn’s moons will remain pristine for future exploration.
