Swipe left to see the entire image. In a purely moonless natural night, away from artificial lights, it becomes dark enough to see how the Galaxy and starlight dimly illuminate the landscape. A long exposure image reveals this further. Here the core of the Milky Way, setting over the Southern Ocean, is the main source. Note the shadows created by the sea stacks blocking the galactic light! I have experienced this in many of the world's remaining dark sky places. On this night of Port Campbell National Park in Victoria, Australia, standing on the last landmass before Antarctica, the combination of terrestrial and celestial wonders was an ultimate beauty.
