3 days of conference on child abuse and here are my most important takeaways: One of the 10 commandments says: “Honor Thy Mother and Thy Father”. There is no commandment that speaks about honoring children. 40 million children suffer from abuse every year. There is a term for the killing of children: filicide. It’s more common than you think but often either kept behind closed doors or sensationalized by the press. People who abuse their children are often victims of trauma and abuse themselves. On our neighbor island of Curacao, 50% of children report abuse at home. One in two children. We are still waiting for reliable data in Aruba, but chances are numbers are similar. Spanking and smacking your child is child abuse (by definition). It’s a criminal offense punishable by law in 43 of the most developed countries in the world. Children who grow up getting spanked are likely to spank their own children as parents and for some, the line between spanking and hitting blurs. The professionals in this field are EXHAUSTED. I sat through 3 days on this topic, often covering my eyes during seminars because it was too much to manage. I celebrate every social worker, psychologist, teacher and pediatrician out there dealing with this on a day to day basis. You not only deserve some sort of award (and a raise!) for doing immensely important work, but most importantly: support to continue on. This fact blew my mind - out of professionals who support people who have lived through serious trauma, 50% experience trauma of their own of THE SAME intensity as the person they are treating (who experienced the trauma in the first place). Conclusion: helping people move through trauma can be traumatic. Everyone doing his work needs support. There are children getting physically, sexually and emotionally abused in our very own communities right now. The question is: How can we help them? I will be dedicating the next few years of my life to figuring that out. ➡️ @yogagirlfoundation . . PS - every worker in the field present at the conference this weekend - come take free yoga classes at the studio. For as long as you need. Bring your conference pass to check in. x
