I left my comment section in the middle of the night yesterday after 15 hours of traveling. I have not spent any time reading comments today - I’ve been with my baby and my husband having not seen them for 5 days, and also, preparing the actual work of booking people for the podcast and collecting article submissions on this topic to do what I have already said is the main focus of having this conversation: to learn. One specific person made it very difficult to use the comment section to learn and listen yesterday and as I don’t want to silence anyone I did not block her. I did feel reaffirmed in my belief that the comment section of a social media feed is not the best way to educate people. It quickly gets filled with distraction and drama - and ignorance. I haven’t blocked or reported anyone, contrary to what this person says. Now, after a very graceful story tag, I check back in and I want to make this very clear: I DO NOT TOLERATE RACISM OF ANY KIND ON THIS PLATFORM. There is so much tone policing and gaslighting and blatant racism filling that specific comment feed right now I am at a loss of what to do. Should I shut the comment section down (something I don’t want to do because in the mix there is also valuable knowledge being shared and discussion sparked)? Should I start blocking people by the hundreds? If you are actively engaged in this conversation, go to my stories for some important terms to learn and articles to read. If you are attacking POC, stop. Stop immediately. There has been one single person trolling and obsessively and personally attacking me - one. I have let her remain in the discussion out of respect for the importance of this topic. My problem with her is the distraction her personal issue with me is causing, not the validity of her point on this topic. I don’t need anyone else to jump into my defense. What I need is for everyone to listen and support respectful conversation. Go to Stories for more resources. Thank you.
