#MichaelCohen once believed he would lead Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. When that didn’t happen, he told friends he might become White House chief of staff. That didn’t happen either, but still he told a reporter he would “take a bullet for the president.” Instead, Trump’s longtime "fixer" and personal lawyer stood in a federal courtroom in Manhattan on Aug. 21 and, in the parlance of the president, ratted him out. Wearing a dark suit and a gold tie, Cohen pleaded guilty to eight charges that included five counts of tax evasion, two counts of campaign finance violations and making false financial statements. It was under oath, in a stunning admission, that Cohen said he worked “at the direction of the candidate” to keep a former Playboy model and an adult film actress quiet about alleged affairs they previously had with Trump, and that those actions were specifically designed to influence the 2016 presidential election. "Did you know what you were doing was wrong and illegal?" the judge asked of Cohen. He replied, "Yes, your honor." Also on Tuesday, a jury found Trump’s former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, guilty on eight counts of bank and tax fraud related to his work as a political consultant overseas, in the first trial win for Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
