I’ve seen 100’s of Aretha posts today but this is special to me for a few reasons. First the song choice “The Makings of You” written by Curtis Mayfield which is one of the greatest songs of all time. Second, the audience. Donnie Simpson is one of my favorite people on earth and if anybody could convey the joy of hearing what heaven sounds like it’s him. Just look at his face. Priceless. 3rd: Aretha playing piano. While people loved her behind a microphone, behind a piano is where the true talent separation begins between her and everyone else. I was blessed enough to be sitting in the Donnie Simpson seat next to the magic of Aretha at the piano in Detroit at her home. Terry and I along with Big Jim Wright thought we were meeting about Producing her. That “meeting” turned into her cooking us lunch, and serenading us with unwritten ideas she had in her mind. I have a cassette of it somewhere but the experience is etched in my mind under my “what heaven must sound like” file. Heaven has her back now and I’m sure she’s already invited the rest of the royal family, Michael, Whitney, Prince, to dinner. And of course she’s cooking it.
