Przewalski’s horses (aka P-horses) are native to China, Mongolia and Kazakhstan. All the P-horses alive today are descended from 14 individuals and the species was once extinct in the wild. Scientists at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute study P-horse reproduction and bank sperm samples. In 2013, they welcomed the first P-horse ever born as the result of an artificial insemination. Techniques like artificial insemination can help increase the genetic diversity of the species.
