Laura Alma-Tadema, the wife of Victorian painter Lawrence Alma-Tadema, was a much-praised and widely exhibited artist in her own right.⠀

The young Laura Epps studied with the progressive Pre-Raphaelite artist Ford Madox Brown, whose studio was particularly welcoming to female artists. In 1869, at one of Madox Brown’s Boxing Day parties, she met Alma-Tadema. It was love at first sight.⠀

The couple married in 1871. Unlike many women of her generation, Laura continued to paint for the rest of her life.⠀
