Spike Lee is taking on the Ku Klux Klan. In @blackkklansman, his latest film, the director uses the true story of a black police officer infiltrating the Ku Klux Klan in Colorado in the 1970s to once again grapple with American racial terrorism. @officialspikelee wasn’t originally involved with #BlacKkKlansman. He inherited the project from @jordanpeele, who on the heels of @getoutmovie, found himself too busy to direct. As a tagline early in the film exclaims (in capital letters, punctuated with an expletive), “BlacKkKlansman” is “Based on Some Fo’ Real, Fo’ Real” material. But instead of opening with his truth-is-crazier-than-fiction story of a black police officer named Ron Stallworth, @officialspikelee features scenes from films that he’s revisited before: “The Birth of a Nation” and “Gone With the Wind.” He uses the 2 classics to pursue a theme threaded throughout his work — to tell the story of American racial terrorism. The juxtaposition is vintage Lee: a blend of satire, realism and in-your-face political commentary. @heathersten took this portrait of #SpikeLee while on #nytassignment.
