This car is not built for speed. It burns through gas. And it’s too big to park on any street. But for more than 6 decades, this open-air car has served as New York City's official parade car. It has only 1 job: ushering VIPs through blizzards of #tickertape on Broadway. The vehicle, photographed here by @hlswift, is a 1952 Chrysler Imperial Parade Phaeton, 1 of only 3 that Chrysler made. It stretches 20 feet from front to back and can seat up to 8. Throughout the years, its back seat has hosted world leaders and celebrities. It gave rides to the Apollo 11 astronauts; American hostages freed from Iran; and the kings and queens of Greece, Denmark, Thailand and Nepal. “It’s really a piece of city history,” said Lisette Camilo, the commissioner of the Citywide Administrative Services Department, the official caretaker of the parade car. “It’s a touchpoint. It puts New York City at the heart of world events.” The car is so prized that it has its own entourage — at all times, it’s escorted by 2 vehicles, one in front and one in back. But when rain’s in the forecast, it stays home. Visit the link in our profile to read more. #?
