What do 525 ventriloquists do at a convention? Ask their dummies. Last week, we attended the Vent Haven International Ventriloquist Convention at an airport Holiday Inn in Erlanger, Kentucky. We’re far from the golden age of #ventriloquism. (For years it has held a reputation as being dorky at best, sinister at worst.) But the mood was upbeat among the human Vent Haven attendees. If the 13-year-old ventriloquist @itsdarcilynne could win @agt, maybe their passion has a future. “It’s a little cooler because of Darci,” said Daniel Jay Robison, 57, who traveled to Erlanger from Ohio. “Now kids at least know what ventriloquism is.” The annual gathering is linked to @venthavencurator, a museum in nearby Fort Mitchell that’s home to about 900 dummies. The meetup is the primary time when vents, as they call themselves, can talk shop and display their skills.
