In Quebec, dozens of churches have been transformed — into luxury condominiums, restaurants and upmarket fitness centers. In the 1950s, 95% of Quebec’s population went to Mass; today that number is down to 5%. The sharp drop in attendance, coupled with spiraling maintenance costs, has made heritage groups, architects and the church itself think creatively to conserve historic buildings. As of April, 547 churches in the Canadian province had been closed, sold or transformed. While not everyone’s pleased with these radical makeovers, one church director — whose church is now a theater — sees it as an evolution. “I don’t feel any taboo in transforming a church into a theater, as we are remaining true to the church’s mission of serving the community,” Gérald St-Georges told our reporter @dan_bilefsky. @cmoosh took this photo of “Le Chic Resto Pop,” which caters to socially disadvantaged residents and bohemian artists. Swipe left to see more former churches: a fromagerie that hosts both cheese tastings and Sunday mass, an upmarket gym and spa, sealed graves in the basement a student residence and the Théâtre Paradoxe.
