One of my favorite parts about living in the Bay Area is the diversity and all the walks of life. Recently while climbing at the gym I noticed a group of super psyched young girls cruising the walls and supporting each other with a pure energy that I only see once in a while. They were having a ball. I learned from one of the younger members that they were the “Brown Girls Camp”. I tried to act cool as if I knew what that was and walked away and immediately looked it up. The “camp” @browngirlsclimbing1 was spearheaded by Emily Taylor of Taylored Fit Solutions and program director of Brown Girls Climbing, which is a youth program. Emily is rooted in the coaching world and has aided in the progress of Kai Lightner @kailightner. Brown Girls Climb @browngirlsclimb was started by Bethany Lebewitz @betylabeta another organization involved with promoting women of color to enjoy climbing indoors and out. I saw hashtags like #colorthecrag, #frobackfriday and #diversifyoutdoors. This is “hella tight”!!! (as they say around here) I feel proud and inspired by what this group is doing! The fact that this is in my local gyms and community, adding youthful diversity to what I love is so great considering how it has lacked for so many years. It’s impressive to see where we are in our modern era and cannot wait to see both of these groups grow.
