Simeon Solomon is possibly the greatest Victorian artist you’ve never heard of.

A child prodigy and a member of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, Solomon was at the peak of his career when he lost it all. In 1873, he was caught in a sexual act with another man and arrested. His reputation and career never recovered.

Solomon lost his patrons, and high-profile friends like Dante Gabriel Rossetti turned their backs on him. But he never stopped working. Although he could no longer afford oils, Solomon continued to work on paper and developed a new beautiful style, full of melancholia.

One Victorian who admired Solomon through thick and thin was Oscar Wilde. In 1877, Wilde described the artist as a ‘genius’ in a student article; he would later purchase a few of Solomon’s drawings.
