North Carolina’s #outerbanks is a thin coastal sandbar, home to Cape Hatteras National Seashore, thousands of residents and is a sanctuary for sea birds. It’s a fragile ecosystem on the front lines when the weather turns, especially during the hurricane season. As climate change continues to ramp up this place really feels the blow. In the last 2 decades it’s suffered billions of dollars in damages. Seen here is the remnants of the #FriscoPier, which sustained severe damage from hurricane Isabel in 2003. Once iconic to the area, the high cost of repair has left it in this unusable state ever since. Photographed on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック
