People fleeing violence in Central America endure perilous journeys to get to the United States. Human smugglers charge thousands of dollars and treat migrants like cargo. When our reporter @nicholaskulish met Christopher Cruz, the 22-year-old was fleeing what he said was near-certain death at the hands of local gangs in El Salvador. Christopher’s family spent over $12,000 to get him to the U.S. — an almost inconceivable amount of money for someone who earned just a few dollars a day back home. And yet he still slept amid filth and vermin on his journey. Sometimes the smugglers identified him by a numeric code, other times by an assumed name. As often as not, they simply called him “the package.” But he says it was worth it. “They can send as many soldiers to the border as they want, but a people’s need and desire for a better life is stronger,” said Christopher, who’s pictured here in a portrait by @theotherchrislee.
