In Norwegian the area north of Svalbard is called Sjuøyane, (Seven Islands) and it’s where the archipelago lets go of its rocky mass and gives way to the Arctic Ocean. North of here, there is just ice and ocean all the way to the North Pole, It feels remote. But on a calm day the waters can be deceptively still, allowing for deep reflections like this one.
In winter the islands are surrounded by sea ice, but most summers now, they can be relatively ice free. The yearly trend for summer sea ice cover in the northern Barents Sea and Arctic Ocean, is downwards. Swipe across to see a detail from the photograph.
