For over a century, Skid Row was the center of homeless life in #LosAngeles. But in recent years, homelessness has leapt beyond its old boundaries. This year, more than 53,000 people in LA are living without homes. “For many in Los Angeles, the spread of homelessness is a challenge to their identities as political progressives,” writes our reporter @twarango. “Some are angered by the presence of the homeless and some communities have mobilized to keep shelters out of their neighborhoods.” City parks are one place where the homeless and the affluent intersect, testing the limits of empathy. “The same neighbors who scream about homeless encampments on the block will oppose affordable housing,” said John Maceri, executive director of The People Concern, a social services agency. “You can’t have it both ways.” Here, Kaitlynn Park, 18, and Aramis Mobley, 19, were getting food and clothing at a public beach in the Pacific Palisades, which is held up as a model of success for a community helping the homeless. Swipe left to see another kind of success: Colin Dangaard, 76, a Malibu resident who decided to build an apartment on his ranch for a man who was once homeless. “I don’t understand why everyone doesn’t do it,” says Colin, who’s paid $1,100 a month by the city.
