From #NYTOpinion | The Mobile-Tensaw Delta is “an indescribably beautiful place,” @margaret.renkl writes in the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ Opinion section. Encompassing roughly 300 square miles, it’s the 2nd-largest delta region in the United States. (First? The Mississippi Delta.) Designated a National Natural Landmark, the Mobile-Tensaw Delta is home to some 67 rare species. It’s also an important way station for migrating songbirds. 2 years ago, @margaret.renkl took a tour of the delta with a guide named Jimbo Meador. She returned recently to see the American lotus, “a creamy yellow flower the size of a luncheon plate that rises above floating pads of foliage so large they collect rainwater.” When @margaret.renkl and her husband arrived in mid-June, the forecast called for intermittent storms. “Let’s go on out,” said Jimbo, who’s 77. “Worst thing that could happen is we get struck by lightning in a beautiful place,” he joked. A certified master naturalist, he has spent most of his life in this maze of a delta, where the water and the land come together with the sky. “You know what the worst invasive species that we have is?” he asked. The answer: “Us.” Visit the link in our profile to join @margaret.renkl and our staff photographer @damonwinter on the tour.
