Welcome to the Open Book. It’s a #bookstore in Wigtown, Scotland, that offers a literary experience unlike any other. Upstairs, there’s an apartment that’s rentable by the week. But there’s a catch. Once you move in, you’re handed the keys and cash box and the shop is yours to run as you see fit. You can reshelve or redecorate as long as you tend to customers. The Open Book is run by a nonprofit group. It has touched a chord with so many people, from every continent, that it’s booked through 2021, which is as far as Airbnb will take reservations. There’s a waiting list after that. Our book critic @DwightGarner wedged himself in for a single night to write about the experience. “All day, kind and eccentric locals popped in to say hello,” he wrote. “One woman brought me shortbread. Others inquired worriedly about our American president, as if I might have a copy of the famous Russian tape.” When the store opened, it was almost an instant success.
