apparently, this is how serious I take my interviews: meet Valerio, he’s been running the Monastery at Monaci Cistercensi Della Certosa Di Firenze for over 60 years with the monks. He is in his 70s now, he was a small lost child who started working there at 10 years old.
I asked him what they ate to how they devotionally live for others — they are declining in numbers with each year. I also asked him if they did bad things or if they like to party lol — he replied “I’ve never seen them do anything bad” and we both died of laughter. ??
Valerio happily showed us around the church & monastery grounds & where he hand produced liquor, perfume, jams and ceramics.. then.. he took me to his beautiful shoppe where he has been selling his life’s offerings for the church — and something happened that’s never happened to me before —-I couldn’t breathe for a moment — my eyes welled up into tears —- I choked up as I looked around at the jars filled with blueberry, cherry, tomato and orange preserves, they glimmered back at my eyes which were welling up — I couldn’t even talk — there was this moment of tremendous joy that overcame me. I could not believe how this man devoted his whole life to and for others with not wanting anything in return— I watched him sell all of his/the monks homemade goods to the public —-so selflessly. He mentioned that he doesn’t understand why we- the young generation are on social so much — he said he tries to tell his small nephew to go out and play soccer! —-to pray, to endure, to surrender, to serve. That’s what I’ll be talking about in some of my next podcasts.
