Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Red fox cubs playing – It is images such as these that I’d always sought, ever since becoming a wildlife photographer. There has always been something so magical about foxes and growing up where I did, in the heart of rural Mid Wales I hardly ever saw one. So persecuted were they that even though I used to walk down a mile long rural lane every morning on my way to school, and back again every evening, in all of those years I only ever saw one fox. When I did finally pick up a camera it was this species that I most sought, that I was most fascinated by. For some reason the idea of being able to document the lives of the cubs from infancy through to adulthood, and all of the play-fighting and interaction that occurs along the way, has always remained my photographic Holy Grail. Though I’ve been privileged to do this just once the limitations of the site meant that capturing such action, when it rarely occurred was extremely difficult. This image however, and all of the images that I was able to capture on that one precious evening a few weeks ago, the first time that I’ve hit the buffer on my camera, will always be viewed fondly, though inevitably tinged with sadness. Unable to go back to the site, my presence would likely put them and the resident badgers in peril as the gun happy landowners need no invitation to kill for kicks. All I can do is hope, hope that these little ones made it through and that in time they might find their own territory where they themselves can raise their young, free from the threat of mindless persecution.
