Have you seen one of these while gardening or working in your backyard this month? These are June bug larvae, or grubs, which are commonly seen in May and June, since that’s when the adult bugs mate and lay eggs. A female lays anywhere from 50 to 200 eggs at a time and they hatch after about two and a half weeks. June bugs go through four life cycles: egg, larvae, pupae and adult. Grubs can live underground for two to three years and grow to be about an inch long before emerging as adults. Grubs hatch underground and spend this stage of their life under the soil eating plant roots. Over the course of the next two to three years, they pass through two other stages, becoming larger and more hungry with each stage. Grubs can kill small plants, but tend to have less of an effect on larger plants with more robust root systems. After they have reached the third stage, they emerge the following spring as adults.
