Did you know there are over 2,400 species of praying mantis? The jeweled flower mantis, as its name suggests, mimics flowers. Their contrasting green, yellow, and brown coloration camouflages them amongst foliage, but when disturbed they open their bright pink wings to startle potential predators. Like all mantises, they prey on a variety of insects. After hatching from their egg case, nymphs take from four to six months to reach maturity and have a total lifespan of less than a year.
Mantises have become popular pets around the world, and many beautiful exotic species, such as this one, are well established in captivity. The flower mantis seen here was photographed at Albuquerque BioPark, which has established breeding colonies of more than 45 different species of mantis, beetle, cockroach, katydid, stick insect, and other arthropods.
