Cream-edged tiger beetles are found on saline or alkaline flats in the Great Plains, from North Dakota to Texas. They share a unique behavior used by many organisms living in warm environments. Since these flats can become very hot during the summer, this tiger beetle will often run into the shade to cool itself. Even the larvae protect themselves by plugging their burrows to avoid heat extremes. A plugged burrow helps them during flooding events as well. This species gets its name from the cream-colored markings along the outside edges of their wing covers. In Nebraska where this individual was photographed, it is known only in 4 counties, living in the eastern saline marshes of the state.
