Hindemith’s “Finale” from his Solo Sonata Op. 11, No. 6 has got a LOT of double stops - and of course, beautiful melodies ? ———————————————————————— This is one of those pieces that are definitely lesser known, but it made a lot of sense to me to play this at the Menuhin Competition: Paul Hindemith’s music was banned from Nazi Germany, partly because of his socially critical compositions. He therefore made Switzerland (and the United States) his chosen home, and spent years there. As a swiss citizen visiting the Hindemith Haus in Blonay a few times myself (for masterclasses and such), as well as the Menuhin Competition being held in Switzerland this past April, I chose his Finale as my “free choice” piece because it spoke to me on more than a musical level ? ———————————————————————— Hindemith saw the role of a composer or musician as one of a craftsman rather than an artist, often times giving his music a “machine” or military-like element. That’s my little Hindemith-history crash course in an Instagram caption ahaha ?? ———————————————————————— I love how his character is shown in his music, and how the ruthless elements contrasts to the passionate, almost pleading melodies in this piece in particular. Listen to the whole “Finale” in the link in my bio! ? ———————————————————————— What are your thoughts on 20th century music?! Any particular favorite composers?
