Late last year, an official with the @nycparks department came across a pair of cardboard boxes containing 2,924 color slides — pictures of parks across NYC’s 5 boroughs taken late in the summer of 1978. A strike at the city’s newspapers that year meant that @ニューヨーク・タイムズ photographers had some time on their hands. So 8 of them — Neal Boenzi, Joyce Dopkeen, D. Gorton, Eddie Hausner, Paul Hosefros, Bob Klein, Larry Morris and Gary Settle — met with the city parks commissioner, Gordon J. Davis, and proposed to wander the city. “I was skeptical, but I said OK,” he said. “What they came back with made me cry.” The city was a financial ruin at the time. Stuff was busted and it seemed it would be that way forever. But New Yorkers drank beer and licked Popsicles and smoked weed. They played cricket players, flew kites and went fishing. The infamous wretched New York of the 1970s and 1980s can be glimpsed here, but that version has never been truth enough. The photos speak a commanding, unwritten narrative of escape and discovery.
