#SpeakingInDance | "There are always new things that come up, especially when we’re around water,” said @saucedo_erica of dancing in “Building a Better Fishtrap/from the river's mouth,” the third installation in a series of works by the choreographer Paloma McGregor and her group, @angelaspulse. Audiences members will watch the June 23 performance, part of Live Feed at @nylivearts, by boat along a 1 1/2-mile stretch of the @bronx_river. “When we got here today, the sun was hitting the river and there were a bunch of silver fish,” Erica said. “I was thinking about reflection and refraction — how memory can be this constantly shifting, shimmering thing.” Paloma’s overarching project is related to her father’s vanishing fishing tradition in St. Croix, where net fishing has taken over from traps and baskets. In this duet, performed by Erica and Christine King, some of the gestural hand movement is drawn from what he taught her about building traps. “This piece explores that idea of different pieces of the world trying to connect or call to one another,” Paloma told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ writer @giadk. “The connection those fishermen have to the natural environment has been important to carry with me. It lives here on the river.” @mosadek made these videos for #SpeakingInDance, our weekly series exploring the world of #dance.
