#worldrefugeeday Swipe - “These pictures of the same Somali mother and daughter, taken 15 years apart. The first was taken in Kakuma refugee camp in 2002, where Marwah and her very sick toddler, Zara, were just 2 of 70,000 refugees, desperate to find a new country to call home. The second photo shows them last year at their suburban home in New York, where the family is thriving and Zara is headed for college.

Today I attended a naturalization ceremony in Virginia where 410 people from 81 countries became American citizens. Among them was a young woman from Sweden who is as dear to me as a daughter. These ceremonies always bring me to tears as I witness relief and hope and gratitude in abundance. We, who were born under a lucky star, must never forget that we are a nation of immigrants.
