The hamster ball was invented in the 1970s. A decade later, people realized they could get in on the fun, and a group called the “Dangerous Sports Club” created the first human hamster ball. The idea didn’t take off for another decade until two New Zealanders invented Zorbing in the 1990’s.
I shot this footage while working on Bounce, a feature documentary that set out to answer a simple question. Why do people everywhere love to play ball? You’de be forgiven for thinking Zorbing is a frivolous pursuit, but people and many animals have a hard-wired urge to play.
Why would evolution wire us to risk injury and “waste” calories in the pursuit of fun? This question is known as the paradox of play. The answer is more elusive and complicated than you might think.

You can see a trailer for Bounce in my bio link.
For camera geeks, I shot this in 4k on a Red Epic and Zephyr Steadicam. I have no idea why, but I chased this Zorb all the way down the hill flying this rig while wearing flip-flops.
