A midnight moonrise above the Atlantic created a magical moment, but there is a hidden story underneath. Oceans are the beating heart of our planet, and we filled them with plastic waste. Since reading June 2018 @ナショナルジオグラフィック cover story (Planet or Plastic?), I can’t stop thinking about the shocking facts. Earth can not handle our “throw away” lifestyle anymore. Five trillion pieces of plastic are already floating in the oceans, mostly come indirectly from waste into rivers. Even most pristine beaches are covered by micro-plastics. Sea life can turn a single plastic bag to a million microscopic fragments that last from 450 years to forever. We probably eat some of our own plastic in the seafood. Less than 20% of all plastic get recycled globally, under 10% in the US. Half of the world mismanaged plastic waste was from China and 4 other Asian countries. Read the online article on natgeo.com
