Svolvær Norway. This statue is called the Fisherman’s Wife and stands on the route out to sea from Svolvær harbour on the Lofoten Islands. The sculpture welcomes fishermen and sailors back to shore in safety. Talking to my friends on the Norwegian west coast I’m reminded of the bond between many of the families and the sea. It’s only a few generations ago that very young men -boys even, had to follow their fishermen fathers out to sea. GPS, radio communication and life saving equipment are relatively recent inventions. A sailor’s life is safer now -but the sea is always treated with great respect.
