With a bell diameter of 70 cm (28 in) and tentacles that extend up to 21 m (70 ft), purple striped jellyfish are a sight to see in the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean. To move small distances, these jellyfish contract and pulse their bells, but for longer treks they ride the sea currents. They form symbiotic relationships with cancer crabs who attach themselves to all parts of the jellyfish, even inside their guts. The crabs eat parasitic amphipods that can be harmful to the jellyfish, while getting an easy meal for themselves. If you see one of these jellies in the ocean, feel free to marvel, but keep a safe distance. Their sting isn’t fatal, but it can be extremely painful.
