This Asiatic black bear was photographed at the Kamla Nehru Zoological Garden in Ahmedabad, India. This species of bear, with the use of powerful forelimbs and short claws, are adept at climbing trees in temperate, subtropical and tropical forests. They are mainly herbivorous, feeding on acorns, fruits, berries even tree bark, but they have been known to eat the prey that tigers have killed. Encounters with one another sometimes will lead to fighting, in which the bears will stand on their hind limbs, slapping their opponents with massive forepaws. These bears are listed as “Vulnerable” on the IUCN Red List due to many years of unnecessary hunting and habitat loss from logging, building of roadways, and agriculture expansion. Countries where the Asiatic black bear is native have collaborated with stakeholders to create conservation action plans to protect these bears along with their habitats. Human-bear conflicts is another issue for this species and the Wildlife SOS (@wildlifesos) of India continues the hard work of mitigating these conflicts.
