Common yabbies like this one named "George" have one BIG defense; spreading those huge claws to warn off potential predators. This species, photographed at Healesville Sanctuary (a part of @zoosvictoria) are found throughout Australia in freshwater streams and rivers or in muddy waterways where vegetation is ample to hide in. If they happen to lose an appendage, the common yabby can go through the process of regrowing their arms and legs. To catch yabbies, people commonly use nets, but with unintended consequences; drowning other wildlife including turtles and even platypus who swim into the one-way funnel, get stuck, and die within minutes.
