Just north of the Horn of Africa, sandwiched between Somalia and Eritrea lies Djibouti. This small nation hosts one of most important, yet least visited whale shark aggregations sites in the world. While volatile regional politics have kept large scale tourism away, marine scientists have been making important discoveries there for more than a decade. Every winter whale sharks gather to feed on plankton blooms fueled by wind driven upwelling and fierce desert sunshine.
