I had tried without success to get a magazine to back me when I went off to cover the 50th, but it was at a time when most editors would say “we don’t do anniversary stories.“ But by the time I made this picture of Bob Williams walking off the drop zone on June 6, Time Magazine had decided they needed to do a piece called “why D-Day matters.” This picture opened the story as a double page, and Bob Williams became a friend for life. #memorialday #doubletruck
