King Penguin Colony, Fortuna Bay, South Georgia Island // Photo by Kevin Schafer – @schaferpho @ナショナルジオグラフィック – You may have missed the news, but this month marked what can only be described - without exaggeration - as one of the greatest achievements in wildlife conservation…EVER. I am referring to the announcement that the Antarctic island of South Georgia has been declared free of rats after a 5-year program of eradication, the most ambitious ever attempted anywhere on earth. Why is this a big deal? Because South Georgia is home to one of the greatest collections of seabirds and other wildlife of anywhere on the planet yet, for more than two centuries, millions of ground-nesting birds have been killed and eaten every year by rats. With the confirmation that the island is finally rat-free, the way is clear for an explosion of life. I have been fortunate to visit South Georgia many times over the past two decades, and this is simply thrilling news, and suggests that this kind of large-scale island restoration is possible. What’s next? How about the eradication of non-native predators from the entire country of New Zealand; it is no longer just an impossible dream. To find out more about South Georgia and this effort, go to Google News and enter “Rat-free South Georgia” or the "South Georgia Heritage Trust”. #southgeorgia #ratfreeworld
