Third grade was a tough year for us. Mazzy got real homework, went from simple addition problems to fractions and division and needed to reprioritize her time to get her work done. She really struggled with math at the beginning of the year and we battled nightly over it. It felt unfair to her that she had to use her time to do work instead of play. It felt unfair to me that the main quality time I have with my daughter in the evenings was spent fighting over math homework. We ended up getting her a math tutor and it turned out, she really needed the one-on-one attention to get her basics down so she could keep up with all the new things they were learning in school. She hated when the tutor came but she worked hard when she was here and we started to see real improvement. Improvement in her ability to get her work done, in her attitude about doing homework and a huge increase in her confidence, which was the most important. Plus, once the battles stopped and I was less involved with helping her, the work took up a lot less time. When possible, she even started doing a lot of her homework between school and her after school activities to keep her evenings free. Towards the end of the year, at Mazzy's request, I had a discussion with the math teacher at school and we agreed that the tutor wasn't necessary anymore. In fact, Mazzy was now a bit ahead and doing great in class. It felt so awesome to be able to tell her that she had worked hard and it had paid off. I was someone who always skated by and never excelled in anything throughout my school career, and I actually think that Mazzy having the experience of needing to work extra hard to keep up and then getting ahead was the best case scenario for her. I wrote a lot more about our experience with math and homework on my blog, if you are interested. It was a big lesson for me in the "fixed vs growth mindset" and how much math studies have changed since I was a kid. Basically, Mazzy wasn't the only one who learned a lot this year. I’d love to know if other moms in #thebigkidyears can relate!
