We’re saddened to hear about the death of novelist Philip Roth, who passed away yesterday at the age of 85.

We’ll always remember him for his generosity, when he donated a personally annotated, first edition of ‘American Pastoral’ to our First Editions/Second Thoughts charity auction in 2014.
.
His book went on to become the auction's top lot, achieving US$80,000 including buyer’s premium – all proceeds went to benefit PEN American Center, the literary and human rights charity defending free expression and fostering literary pursuits.
