African elephant dust bath – My apologies for the silence recently but I’ve been out in Zambia’s legendary South Luangwa National Park for the last week leading a photographic trip. We had a fantastic week with brilliantly enthusiastic guests and over the course of our time there we were treated to some memorable encounters, not least with these elephants after they emerged from crossing the Luangwa river. We were actually fortunate on this occasion as the overcast light really played into our hands, eliminating harsh shadows and allowing the texture of both the dust and the elephants skin to show through. With images such as this it often feels like there are an infinite number of crops that can be made, so interesting is the contrast in texture and form so I thought that for Instagram I’d go for quite a tight crop that focusses on the most interesting part of the image. Though the dust bath session was only brief I don’t know what I’d prepared to give to be privileged enough to experience such a display over a longer period and in hindsight I perhaps wish that I had been brave enough to keep shooting with my 600mm F4, instead of switching to the more flexible 200-400mm. The dilemma that I had was that the elephants would normally spray the dust over their backs, creating a lovely arc in the dust but for these occasions, when the dust was sprayed on their sides I’d loved to have been able to go in really tight and work on some more abstract compositions.
